… From the first moment I discovered this wood lying on the ocean beach I knew it was destined to become one of the most intriguing and beautiful sculptures I would ever create. And I was right. Nature was good to me, and the wood-gods helped me give this sculpture a form and beauty that will never be duplicated.
… The primary wood for this sculpture is “probably” from a deciduous tree (maple or black walnut?), but since it was driftwood, I will never know the species for sure. The base is black walnut. It came from a storm damaged tree at least 75 years old which died and I collected in 1992. That piece – one of a dozen – has been waiting to be sculpted for over 30 years.
… I have arbitrarily called one side the “front,” but it is fascinating from all sides. The beautiful grain and color mosaic of this salvaged ocean driftwood came from a tree branch that was 8” diameter and over 10 foot long. It had obviously been beaten and tossed around in the ocean for several years before I found it stranded on an Oregon beach.
… Some of the 27.8" tall x 10.6" wide x 10.6’’ deep, 9 lbs. 15 oz sculpture’s rustic exterior has been preserved to add character to the art.
